Captive Services

We help organisations interested in alternative risk transfer opportunities achieve their strategic objectives.

We do this by reducing the total cost of risk, accessing new capacity, and gaining underwriting profit - all made possible through collaboration and innovation with our global Howden colleagues.

Whilst most of our clients are UK-based, we also have clients from all corners of the globe, including Ireland, France, South Africa, Switzerland, Singapore, China and the Caribbean.

Based in Guernsey, we are experts in the local market and specialists in the captive insurance sector. A number of our colleagues have also worked extensively in other captive domiciles, including the Isle of Man, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands.

Captives explained

A "captive insurer" is an insurance vehicle, which is created and wholly owned by the business whose risks it is insuring; it is essentially a more structured and efficient way of self insuring and some of the benefits of a captive include:

  • Premiums that accurately reflect the risks presented
  • Broader and simpler insurance contracts
  • Coverage for risks that are not readily insurable in the commercial market
  • Access to the reinsurance market
  • A new income stream
  • Reduced reliance on the commercial insurance market

The beauty of a captive insurer is that it provides a way of recognising the unique risk profile of the business being insured; it can respond to your specific needs and provide exactly the cover you require.
