Asset Protection: An introduction
“After its people, an organisation’s building and equipment are its lifeline. Large losses are related to loss of buildings and equipment, both of which are key to operations. No building, no business. Here at Howden, our Asset Protection pillar strives to offer great services and solutions that protect, preserve, and provide for the organisation of tomorrow. Whether it’s your buildings or it’s equipment within, we offer solutions to protect you and your assets.” Scott Crichton, Head of Asset Protection.
Protecting your building assets is crucial to not only mitigate potential risks to employees, but also your finances. When unexpected issues arise, they can be costly and potentially put you out of action for a long time – and certainly enough time for it to hurt your bottom line. By securing your assets, you ensure the stability and growth of your business and safety of your employees.
Asset Protection, a Howden Risk Management pillar, utilises tailored and targeted business solutions and actions to address and solve the most common issues commercial buildings face. Our Asset Protection programme covers technological services like drone surveys and thermography surveys, and it also ensures you stay compliant with relevant laws, by undertaking risk control surveys which may also include security consultancy. Our packages come with a variety of additional components, encompassing management services like building valuations and vacant property protection.
HALO: What is it?
At the core of the Asset Protection package sits HALO – Howden’s ‘magic circle’ solution that seamlessly and roundly secures all of your physical business assets, such as your owned buildings. Our HALO package ensures your assets are protected for three years. HALO ensures you’re regularly checking-in on your physical assets, maintaining the highest standards, and keeping necessary assessments up to date. Asset Protection’s services combined with HALO is the perfect product for complete peace of mind,
Set across three years, HALO covers different services in each year which reflect the needs of businesses, support building and asset management, and reduce their risks. Whether you have a large office block, or you’re situated on an industrial estate, HALO includes services for all types of commercial enterprise.
Year 1
In year one you’ll undertake a Benchmark eValuation to determine an accurate rebuild cost for your buildings. Underinsurance affects every industry, so we need to ensure we help our clients eradicate this problem. You can find more on underinsurance here. Also, in year one, you’ll undertake a property risk control survey and receive a free ‘escape of water’ survey for your commercial premises, courtesy of our partners, Leaksafe. Throughout your time with us you’ll also have access to email and telephone support from our specialists and have access to blogs and webinars from Howden and our partners.
Year 2
Once we’ve made progress in year one, we’ll continue this journey in year two. You’ll start the year by undertaking a 3D drone survey to map out and assess your buildings and their threats. You’ll also complete your annual property risk control survey, ensuring the work that’s been done in year one remains in place and any changes have been captured. And you still have access to email and telephone support from the Risk Management team, plus access to our partners’ webinars and blogs through newsletters and updates.
Year 3
In the final year of your HALO term, you’ll undertake a thermography imaging survey which highlights temperature anomalies. Electrical distribution panels in a building can be investigated and any areas that are particularly hot can be assessed, helping you to reduce energy wastage and a potential fire occurring. In year three you’ll undertake your annual property risk control survey to ensure you’re staying on track. And if any losses have occurred, that lessons have been learnt and actions taken. And of course, you’ll still have access to unlimited email and telephone support from the Risk Management team, plus access to our partners’ webinars and blogs through newsletters and correspondence.
Partners and additional services
While the HALO package has been comprehensively created to address and solve a plethora of property issues, we also offer additional services outside of your HALO package when you need them. This suite of services, which can be acquired for an additional fee, not only includes the above, but the opportunity to use specialist services and the insight of trusted partners, including:

- Escape of water surveys

About Scott Crichton, Head of Asset Protection at Howden
Prior to joining Endsleigh in 2022, Scott was a consultant for a large national health and safety and HR consultancy where he worked with a broad SME client base. Clients ranged from small councils to manufacturing clients, and even his local school. During this role, Scott lists his most interesting experience as a site visit where he encountered the 135,000 horsepower Bloodhound LSR – a British land vehicle that can reach 1000mph and was intended to set a new world land speed record.
In 2022, Scott joined Endsleigh’s not-for-profit risk management solutions sector, advising clients across the education sector. And while Scott continues in this role, he has recently transitioned into the Howden risk management team becoming Head of Asset Protection. With 18 years’ experience within the health and safety and fire sectors across a broad selection of sectors, Scott is both suited and excited to support the development of the Asset Protection pillar and wider Howden Risk Management team, offering tailored solutions to meet the requirements of risk management clients.
Working alongside Scott will be Dave Gaskin, our property survey specialist. Dave has worked across the risk management field for the past 30 years, joining Howden around 12 years ago, having spent time with several other leading insurance names. Dave’s current role sees him undertaking risk management surveys across various disciplines, primarily material damage risks (property, construction, security, fire protection) but also extending to liability risks.
Dave continues to work with and support numerous clients in a wide range of industries, from SMEs to nationwide businesses and organisations, supporting their management of exposures.
