Referee & match official insurance

How match officials are protected
Your referees and match officials should feel empowered to make decisions without fear of legal action. Protect every decision with RFU-arranged rugby insurance.
Referees and match officials officiating at RFU clubs or competitions are automatically covered by combined liability insurance and personal accident insurance.
What is combined liability insurance?
The RFU arranges liability protection for referees, touch judges, trainers, and instructors taking part in an RFU-approved activity. This includes two types of cover to protect them financially if a claim is made against them.
Public liability insurance
Accidents can happen, even to those upholding the rules of the game. Public liability insurance covers the cost of claims if an official accidentally injures a third party or damages their property. It provides cover up to a maximum limit of £25m. This includes legal defence costs and any settlements awarded.
Of course, when taking charge of a match, officials should do all they can to reduce and prevent loss, damage, or injury to others.
Professional indemnity insurance
Suggesting the wrong course of action as an official can have serious consequences, from injuries to lost income. Professional indemnity insurance covers legal and compensation costs if they are accused of mistakes in their guidance. This includes defamation cover for alleged harm to someone’s reputation.

Personal accident insurance
Personal accident insurance offers financial protection if referees or other match officials get a permanently disabling injury or die due to their involvement with rugby.
What's covered?
If match officials are permanently injured or disabled, or die due to a rugby-related accident, the insurance pays out. This includes traumatic brain and spinal injuries. They are covered for refereeing, officiating, and playing, including during competitive matches and training. Travelling to and from rugby is also included.
What's not covered?
This doesn’t cover sickness or injury due to a medical condition. It also doesn't cover loss of income due to a temporary injury.
