Rugby coach insurance

How coaches are protected
Coaches are a well-loved member of any rugby club, so it’s vital they’re protected. Providing guidance and advice to other members of the club is a huge part of the role – but what happens if they make a mistake?
Coaches at RFU affiliated clubs are automatically covered by combined liability insurance and personal accident insurance.
A coach was sued for compensation after an allegation that their poor coaching had caused a player to get a back injury. The professional indemnity insurance provided through their RFU insurance handled the legal costs of defending the claim.
What is combined liability insurance?
The RFU has arranged liability protection for coaches working at any RFU club or competition under its combined liability insurance. This includes two types of cover to protect them financially if a claim is made against them.
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance covers legal and compensation costs if coaches accidentally injure a third party or damage their property, and a claim is made against them. It provides up to £25m of cover.
Professional indemnity insurance
Offering guidance and advice is what coaches do – but mistakes can happen. Professional indemnity insurance covers the legal costs and any compensation awarded for negligence, errors, or omissions in a coach’s advice. This includes defamation cover if they’re accused of harming someone’s reputation.

Are all coaches covered?
Coaches at RFU affiliated clubs at men’s Level 3 or below, or Women's Championship or below, are covered by the RFU’s combined liability policy. Coaches working at a school, college, or university on behalf of that club are also covered.
However, freelance coaches that are paid for their work, whether as a sole trader or company, aren’t covered under the RFU combined liability policy. In this case, they’ll need to arrange their own liability cover.
As part of their duty of care, when running a session, coaches should do all they can to create a safe environment for everyone taking part.

What is personal accident insurance?
Personal accident insurance is financial protection if a coach suffers a permanently disabling injury, or dies due to their work for the sport. Rugby union coaches working at an RFU affiliated club or competition automatically have this cover.
What's covered?
This cover pays out a lump sum if a coach is permanently injured or disabled or dies due to a rugby-related accident. This includes cover for catastrophic traumatic brain and spinal injuries.
Accidents while coaching or playing, during competitive matches, and training are covered, along with commuting to and from rugby.
What's not covered?
This policy doesn’t cover coaches for sickness or injury from a medical condition. It also doesn't cover lost income if a coach has a temporary injury.
