Protection for your club and its members

Ramblers Affiliated Clubs have access to Combined Liability cover for their activities.

Incidents happen. That's why all sports organisations need to ensure they have appropriate insurance protection. Without it, individuals can be held personally financially liable to compensate for losses for which you do not hold valid insurance.

Cover is available for all club members and volunteers whilst undertaking activities sanctioned by the club.

Features of the cover include:

  • Public and Products Liability insurance
  • Professional Indemnity insurance
  • Libel and slander
  • Abuse cover
  • Directors' and officers' Liability cover
  • Employers' Liability insurance
  • No policy excess

Activities covered by your insurance are:

  • Walking club setting and administering club rules
  • Ensuring adherence to club rules
  • Disciplining members who fail to adhere to club rules
  • Arranging suitable times and locations for club activities
  • Promotion of club activities
  • Arranging club events for members and fundraising purposes
  • The provision of instruction
  • Coaching, training, tuition, supervision, advice and assessment in respect of Rambling
  • Participation in walking

What is included with indemnity?

  • Walks and rambles as organised and sanctioned by the Ramblers Affiliated club
  • Liability for club members who are sued as a result of an incident involving members’ domestic dogs when the dog is accompanying a member on a walk or activity as stated above
  • Social events arranged by or on behalf of the Ramblers Affiliated club
  • Individuals who may be interested in joining a club are covered provided their personal details are recorded and the records retained. Insurers will allow a maximum of 3 walks under this extension of cover
  • A club member who causes injury, damage or financial loss to a fellow member
  • A club which borrows, rents or leases a premises for club meetings or social purposes and is held liable for damage to the facility

Club Officials

As a club official, you may be personally liable for the liability of your club and the actions of your members.

Howden’s Sport Recreation and Leisure Liability policy automatically provides Directors’ and Officers’ Liability Insurance in order to protect you if you are sued for a negligent decision. For example, allegations of financial wrong doing by a committee member or allegations for negligence following internal disciplinary disputes leading to exclusion of a member. This can lead to legal action against the committee members for failing to follow the club constitution or failing to have appropriate guidelines or processes in place.

Volunteers

Under British law, even volunteers can be classed as employees, even if they are unpaid, as so we advise clubs to have employers liability cover.

To ensure you have adequate protection, Employers Liability Insurance is automatically included in your cover.

Safeguarding

Clubs have a duty of care to safeguard children and adults at risk participating in club events. Due to multiple cases of abuse and neglect in sports and recreation coming to light in recent years, many insurers have been reviewed the cover made available to organisations.

The Ramblers has an established Safeguarding Children and Adults At Risk policy which we advise clubs to adopt. It includes concise and user friendly guidelines for clubs and volunteers who organise activities for members and the public. It’s vital that organisers familiarise themselves with the guidelines, especially for activities likely to be attended by children, young people or adults at risk to meet your responsibilities towards those in your care as a condition of the insurance.
