Guide to supporting men's health in the workplace

Supporting men's physical and mental health

Why employers need to focus on men's health in the workplace

Men face a range of health challenges that can impact their personal and professional lives and employers play a significant role in creating a workplace that supports the physical and mental health of their male employees.

According to research by UK charity Men’s Health Forum, in the UK one man in five dies before he reaches 65.  Up to 75% of all premature deaths due to heart disease are male – and 67% of men are overweight.  Men are also less likely than women to seek medical help, often leading to delayed intervention and treatment.

Mental health is a particularly pressing concern. Suicide rates are higher amongst men, and stigma around mental health can prevent them from seeking support. Work-related stress and the pressure to conform to traditional masculine norms can exacerbate mental health challenges.

Keep an eye on the men in your workplace. They need to feel listened to and that their mental and physical wellbeing are supported.
