Future technology held back by insurance uncertainties
Deep geothermal energy, a technology in search of recognition, uses the earth's heat to meet energy needs sustainably and continuously.
In France, deep geothermal energy is a fast-developing energy technology, but its adoption remains limited by a lack of familiarity and confidence on the part of insurers. This reluctance can be partly explained by the novelty of this renewable energy, but also by the specific risks associated with deep drilling, an area in which all the players involved still have little expertise.
Indeed, serious accidents can occur if drilling operations are not carefully controlled, including incidents such as loss of control of the well, soil pollution and even land subsidence. Despite these risks, deep geothermal energy offers an exceptional opportunity to harness a clean, sustainable and inexhaustible source of energy, which has yet to be used to its full potential in France.
How does geothermal energy work?

According to the International Energy Agency , geothermal Deep is one of the most promising sources of energy. To address current energy challenges, particularly in terms of reducing carbon emissions. In France, several regional initiatives, such as those in Île-de-France, have demonstrated the potential of this technology to power urban heat networks and produce electricity with a reduced carbon footprint, thereby contributing to national energy transition goals.

Continuous, environmentally-friendly energy
Deep geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that harnesses the intense heat of the earth's mantle by recovering the heat contained underground or in groundwater. It is distinguished by its ability to supply heat continuously, unlike other renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power, which are dependent on climatic conditions. This permanently available energy can be used to heat buildings, generate electricity and even support industrial infrastructure without interruptions due to the weather.
Studies conducted by the Geological and Mining Research Bureau confirm the effectiveness of this system for Meeting the energy needs of cities While reducing the carbon footprint of energy supply, thus positively contributing to France's ecological transition.
