Preparing your vessel for severe weather

With severe weather warnings across the Queensland coastline, it is essential to take precautions to ensure your vessels are maintained and appropriately equipped to survive severe weather conditions.

By taking the following actions, you can help mitigate the potential damage caused by cyclones. Make sure you:

  • Refer to Maritime Safety Queensland website
  • Check the status of marine cyclone management plan and follow instructions
  • Review and action your vessel’s Cyclone Management Safety Plan 
  • Check the condition and ensure that mooring lines (preferably rope) are sufficient (deploy additional), adequate (wind load rated) and secured
  • Ensure hatches and the transom door are closed
  • Remove/store passerelle
  • Ensure tenders are stored securely 
  • Check vessels stored on hardstands are appropriately secured
  • Remove sails and loose covers (reduce winding loadings)
  • Deploy additional fenders 
  • Follow cyclone warnings for shore power and disconnect all shore power as appropriate
  • Disconnect and protect from exposure to weather Lithium batteries 
  • Ensure that bilge pumps remain operational
