Seafarers on-leave and family insurance
Howden SAFER at Home offers seamless medical insurance for seafarers and their families, including country of residence coverage

Personal insurance for seafarers and their families
Traditionally, shipping companies don’t provide medical and life insurance to their seafarers in between contracts. For contracted employees, this can mean extended periods where seafarers and their families have no access to healthcare cover.
Howden SAFER at Home bridges the coverage gap. It provides hospitalisation insurance, including both illness and accidents, for seafarers who are on leave and aren’t protected by the onboard Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Insurance. It also covers their families, year-round.
Brought to you in association with Crewsure1 and the global charity, The Mission to Seafarers2, Howden SAFER at Home reduces the financial strain, stress and vulnerability of being uninsured for medical emergencies.
The Philippines is the world's leading supplier of seafarer talent. Their contribution to the economy is clear. Every peso sent home generates three pesos of value through multiplier effects. Let's work together to get Filipino seafarers the protection they deserve.
General respect and recognition must be given to seafarers. Without it, the profession may well continue to lose ground.
Captain Hari Subramaniam explains Howden SAFER at Home and its impact on seafarers and their families
A better way for seafarers and shipping companies
SAFER at Home stands for Seafarers and Families Enhanced Resilience. It’s a healthcare insurance programme for seafarers and their families that offers year-round protection. For seafarers, it covers the months of leave in between contracts. For their families, coverage is year-round.
Attract talent, reduce crew turnover
SAFER at Home is for ship owners/operators and crewing agencies who wish to extend and amplify seafarers' insurance protection over and above the statutory requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention. This could be part of a talent retention strategy or broader employee value proposition effort.
For Filipino shipping companies, offering on-leave home country insurance coverage helps you stand out as an empathetic and caring employer. This is set to become an increasingly important seafarer retention strategy in an global talent market facing a shortage of experienced seafarers. The Philippines is looking to press home its advantage as the world's number one provider of seafarers, with continuous efforts to promote a highly skilled and competitive workforce.
Embracing talent-centred initiatives emphasises the employer’s commitment towards seafarer welfare, which plays an important role in charterer’s ratings of the shipping companies. For example, as part of the Tanker Management Self Assessment (TMSA) and Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS).
All seagoing employees employed with a shipping company are eligible for SAFER at Home through their employers.
