Crash course: what do you need to know after a car accident?
Getting into a fender bender can be a stressful experience, but knowing what to do afterwards can make a big difference, especially from an insurance perspective. Here are some steps to follow if you find yourself in this situation:
Check for injuries
First and foremost, check if anyone is injured and seek medical help if needed. Safety should always be the top priority!
Contact the police
You must report any accident to the police if it results in injury, death or damage to property. They will provide you with a Case Number, which is important for insurance claims.
Exchange information
Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. This includes names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, and vehicle registration details.
Document the scene
Take photos of the accident scene, including damage to vehicles, road conditions, and any relevant road signs or markings. This will help with the claims process.
Notify your insurance company
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Provide them with the details of the accident and the Case Number provided by the police.
