Key policy points
Howden in partnership with Golf New Zealand have put together an insurance package which provides significantly wider cover than standard policies in the market.
Below are some key policy points regards the insurance package:
The information in these pages represents high-level general considerations regards policy coverage benefits. However, this information is subject to the terms, conditions, limits, and excesses in the policy wordings. Please consult your insurance broker first and also ensure that you carefully read the relevant policy wordings and any other coverage documents which outline the benefits, features, terms, conditions, limits, excesses, waiting periods and exclusions of cover.
The base insurance package is competitively priced and includes cover not included in many traditional policies. This includes Material Damage, which covers the following:
- Fairways, driving range and trees/landscaping/driveways/carparks cover;
- Trophies; and
- Stock (including food and beverage), merchandise and pro-shop.
An extended liability package is also available (as a separate policy, if you specifically request it) at a competitive premium, and can include the following cover types if and as requested by you (these may be subject to/under shared limits and have a maximum number of permitted reinstatements for a given period):
- Association Management liability (for the club’s “Management Personnel” (and trusted personnel and staff);
- Association liability cover, which may include:
- Statutory liability;
- Employer’s liability;
- Employment practices liability; and
- Fidelity (Crime) liability;
- General liability;
- Defence costs; and
- Golf Club Public Liability Assistance (GCPLA) including golf ball strike cover.
In addition, hole in one prize cover for prizes of $100,000 or more, and event cancellation cover (including weather cancellation) are each available as an additional cover / policy if you request it.

Insurance considerations
Below are some considerations to work towards the best insurance outcomes for your club and facility.
Sum insured review
Now could be a good time to ensure your organisation’s assets are adequately insured, including a review of your contents, stock (food/beverage and merchandise), building sums, sheds, golf carts, non-registered vehicles/plant and equipment and the Pro-Shop. Theft/burglary/ram raids seem to be on the rise so being correctly insured could be essential to ensure you can replace any stolen/damaged items and deal with any property damage. If your Building Valuation is older than 2 years, you should consider having an updated valuation completed.
Security and fire protection
Reviewing your premises security is also a good idea, because insurers may have requirements that certain security/monitored alarms and the like are in place and current. Being prudent so as to prevent a burglary is a better scenario than going through a burglary claim process. Fire protection is something to be seriously considered too, and so smoke detectors, heat detectors, fire extinguishers, and monitored fire alarms all need to be serviced and kept up to date (both for insurance purposes and essential health and safety requirements). Also, the club’s Management Personnel need to- be familiar with any insurance policy requirements regarding kitchen/catering arrangements, including deep fat fryer warranty endorsements and requirements for cleaning extractor flues.
Construction insurance
Over the winter months when the golfing activity is low, some clubs might look to have renovations or repairs performed on buildings, driving ranges and the like. If your club does this, you should ensure you have the right construction cover in place such as a Contract Works policy which will cover the renovation/work period.
If needed, construction insurance for upgrades to buildings and courts can be arranged (as an extension of an existing policy for works up to NZ $100,000, or if more than that value, via a separate policy).
