Changing the game: How insurance alternatives are driving a new era of empowerment for women in sports

In recent years, the landscape of women's sports has undergone a remarkable transformation, with increasing emphasis on equality, representation, and empowerment.

While strides have been made, there is still a way to go in ensuring that female athletes receive the right level of support that caters not only to gender equality but also access to female-tailored equipment, venues and services, as well as the distinct challenges, needs and desires that are unique to them.

The Matildas, The Diamonds, The Wallaroos and our other world class teams have captured the nation's hearts and changed Australian sport forever, and we must ensure this momentum ripples through generations.

As this momentum continues, the world of insurance and alternative risk transfer must propel alongside it. Howden is committed to innovating and developing tailored solutions that support and empower a little girl’s first step onto a court, pitch or gymnasium through to Women in elite sport and everything in between.

What are the benefits of female-based covers?

With innovative thinking and tailored solutions, Howden are now supporting women in sports in ways that not only reflect the shifting societal dynamics but also spearhead transformative change.

We’re hoping our unique offerings not only encourage more females to take-up a sport, but also provide the confidence in the level of care and well-being we can facilitate for those that are actively participating.

Where does Howden play?

Understanding female sports and the challenges and risks that are unique to women is the first step. We then craft unique solutions, sometimes previously non-existent in the market, which opens up a whole new world of cover that benefits the support, safety and wellbeing of all sportswomen.

This might include coverage for injuries that disproportionately affect women, support for maternity-related needs, and policies that account for the evolving nature of women's sports participation, with a focus on:

•    Protecting Athlete Health and Wellbeing
•    Enabling Participation
•    Supporting Career Longevity
•    Promoting Gender Equality
•    Fostering Safe Environments
•    Encouraging Grass-roots Development

Ultimately, acknowledging the differences and specificities that women in sports encounter, and using this understanding as a foundation for creating insurance solutions that truly cater to their needs is at the forefront of what we aim to deliver” – Craig Harms – Head of Alternative Risk Management Services at Howden.
