Listed properties often have special cultural-historical or architectural qualities that tell about architecture, construction techniques, and cultural history from significant periods in Danish national history. Listed properties are managed by the state, while the municipality handles the preservation-worthy properties.

Due to the special qualities of protected properties, it requires special knowledge of protected buildings in order to appraise them.
