The Motor Ombudsman & Howden Motor Trade

First, let us introduce ourselves...
Howden has long been the specialist and trusted insurance broker of choice for those working in all areas of the motor trade. Whether you’re a mechanic, bodywork expert, tyre fitter, or operate a car sales showroom, you need an insurance partner that truly understands your specific policy and cover needs.
As a motor trade specialist, you’ll appreciate that when you’re working on someone else’s car, their own insurance is never enough – you need something tailored to your trade, tools, and premises, in case the worst happens. And in these circumstances, you’ll want (and deserve) swift, efficient and friendly support from your motor trade insurance partner.
We work with all types of motor trade businesses – from sole traders to franchise main dealers and national car supermarkets, and everything in between. Over the years, we’ve helped some pretty niche businesses secure coverage.

Exclusive offer for Motor Ombudsman-accredited businesses
Howden will provide a 5% premium discount for businesses that are accredited to The Motor Ombudsman, on premiums of up to £35,000 (not in conjunction with any other offers/discounts)*.
With Howden, you'll have...
- Quick decisions – we accept and insure clients without needing to consult with insurers, speeding things up for you.
- Fast service – thanks to our in-house underwriting capabilities, we’ve been known to get insurance cover signed, sealed, and delivered within one hour of an initial enquiry.
- Independent guidance – we work independently with some of the biggest insurers, which means we can negotiate highly competitive premiums and terms.
- Flexibility – our policies and products move with the times. When the industry changes, so do our terms and wordings, keeping them relevant and useful.
- Tailored solutions – our policies bend to your business, not ours. We’ll never just hand you industry standard wording.
If you are not already a Motor Ombudsman-accredited business:
The Motor Ombudsman is the first and only ombudsman to be focused solely on the automotive sector and self-regulates the UK’s motor industry through its comprehensive Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved Codes of Practice. Thousands of businesses are accredited to one or more of the Codes, which drive even higher standards of work and service, and give consumers added protection and peace of mind. If you are not already a Motor Ombudsman-accredited business, here are a few reason why you should consider becoming accredited:
- It demonstrates your business adheres to CTSI-approved Codes of Practice and gives customers confidence in you as a trusted, responsible business.
- You’ll have access to a range of benefits, such as the dispute resolution and ombudsman service, have use of their logo and access to training.
- Customers use TMO's website to find trusted businesses, giving you added exposure and new business leads.
