Uncorking Potential: Enhancing Employee Benefits for a Healthier Workforce

Howden & Berry Brothers & Rudd: Enhancing wellbeing, engagement, and results together.

BBR wanted to completely redesign it’s employee benefits proposition. Despite being a sought-after employer in the wine distribution industry, the organisation was doing the minimum when it came to employee benefits provision. Howden worked with the organisation to find a new healthcare provider, add a health cash plan, launch a new engagement strategy, and introduce a diverse suite of employee benefits.

The challenge

Key objectives

  • The approach to providing benefits had been compliance-based, doing what was required by legislation. This led to low employee engagement and uptake.
  • Lack of preventive health and wellbeing focus despite unique industry risks, which BBR was keen to address.
  • Needed to shift from a “tick-box” strategy to a comprehensive, people-centred programme.
  • BBR felt that in order to attract – and crucially retain – the best talent, it needed an improved package with a much broader appeal.

What we delivered

  • Redesigned benefits strategy with diverse offerings
  • Switched healthcare provider with better engagement tools.
  • Introduced a Health Cash Plan for everyday health costs.
  • Launched wellbeing initiatives like Mental Health First Aiders and new policies (menopause, alcohol awareness, etc.).
  • Created engaging communications: newsletters, webinars, posters.
  • Our expert insights tailored benefits strategy to BBR’s needs.
  • Seamless implementation with effective roll-out and communications.
  • Strong relationship built on understanding BBR’s culture.

Berry Bros. & Rudd received industry recognition for their transformative employee benefits strategy and their focus on delivering preventative health and wellbeing solutions to their people at the Employee Benefits Awards in 2024.

Highlight of the Achievement:

  • The redesigned programme was celebrated for its innovative approach to employee wellbeing and engagement.
  • Acknowledgement of Howden’s role as a strategic partner in delivering impactful results.
Our people are the heartbeat of our organisation, and we really wanted our employee benefits to reflect how important our people are. We wanted them to feel valued and supported… Howden developed a really, really great relationship with us. They've got a really good understanding of our business and how important our people are, and they helped us to shape an employee benefits package that was suitable for everybody.
