Volunteers

BHS operates nationally and regionally, with each region playing a vital role in supporting BHS activities at a local level. BHS currently operates across 9 regions in England and across the 3 nations of Scotland, Wales and Ireland. 

Public liability

BHS Regional and National volunteers organise many different events including training and demonstrations, from how to reverse your trailer to road safety and awareness training. BHS welfare advisers also respond to public concerns about horse welfare.  Whatever your role, BHS volunteers are protected by public liability insurance up to £30,000,000.  

Employers' liability cover is also in place which provides protection if an employee or volunteer is injured due to negligence whilst undertaking duties for BHS.  

Members of staff who coordinate volunteer activity must ensure that all volunteers are provided with the relevant training and support to undertake their roles.  Volunteers must follow BHS guidelines on health and safety, including the requirement for risk assessment of all activities.  

Personal accident

BHS has personal accident insurance in place for all BHS volunteers .  This provides cover if a volunteer sustains an accident whilst undertaking duties on behalf of BHS.   

Cover includes up to £12,000 for death or permanent disablement, including loss of limb, loss of sight or loss of hearing.  The policy also includes up to £120 per week for temporary total disablement which covers loss of earnings in the event that you are temporarily unable to work.  

Directors and Officers  

BHS Committee members are protected by Directors and Officers insurance which covers them if legal action is taken against them for a wrongful act occurring as a result of their duties in an official capacity for a BHS Region.  This would cover such things as defamation, financial mismanagement, breach of duty or discrimination.  

Cover is up to £5,000,000 for legal defence costs and damages.
