Accredited Professionals

Insurance for professional equestrian activities is essential for protecting coaches, grooms and their clients in the unpredictable environment of working with horses.
Through affiliation with BHS, Accredited Professional Coaches and Grooms have the option to include public liability and personal accident cover for their professional coaching or grooming activities within their membership.
As a BHS Accredited Professional, you will automatically receive BHS Gold membership for your personal equestrian activities. The BHS Professional Insurance Package will upgrade your cover to include your coaching and grooming activities.
Public liability
BHS Accredited Professional Coaches and Grooms receive third party public liability insurance for equestrian coaching and grooming activities up to a limit of £10,000,000.
Third party liability insurance protects you against liability you may incur as a result of damage to third party property, or bodily injury to a third party, arising out of coaching and grooming activities.
Under a liability policy, damage to property that you own or that is in your care, custody and control will usually be excluded. There is an extension on the BHS accredited professional’s policy which includes damage to saddlery and tack in your care, as a result of your negligence up to £5,000. The policy also covers injury or loss of a horse in your care, custody or control, due to your negligence, up to £10,000.
Personal accident
The BHS Accredited Professional’s insurance package also includes personal accident cover up to £100,000 for death and permanent disablement as a result of coaching activities.
This policy does not include loss of income. If you require additional cover for loss of income, please contact the Howden team who can review your requirements and recommend additional cover.
APC Frequently Asked Questions
Your accredited professional's insurance policy does not cover personal equestrian activities, only coaching/grooming/assessing as applicable. However, as part of the APC package you automatically receive BHS Gold membership which provides cover for personal equestrian activities subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. Please review the BHS Gold members page to find out more.
No. Your accredited professional's liability insurance provides cover for public liability only. To take on a work experience student you would require employers' liability cover which is a legal requirement. If you require employers' liability cover please contact Howden, but note that we cannot offer stand alone employers liability policies for equestrian businesses.
The APC liability policy will provide cover for your coaching activities at a camp. If you are also the camp organiser you will need separate cover for this in respect of all liabilities outside of coaching, for example the organisation of stabling, accommodation and the hire of the facility. Please contact Howden if you require additional insurance for the organisation of a camp or other event.
The personal accident policy provides a high level of cover up to £100,000 for death and permanent disablement including loss of limb, loss of sight, loss of hearing as a result of coaching activities. The policy does not cover loss of income. Please contact Howden if you require additional loss of income cover.
No. The accredited professional insurance covers you for coaching your client at a competition or grooming for a client. The policy does not extend to competing horses if you are being paid to do this by a client. You would be covered under your BHS Gold membership for any competitive equestrian activities (subject to the terms of the policy). This would include if you were competing a horse that you do not own, providing you are doing this for personal pleasure only and not as part of an agreement to benefit financially in any way.
The liability policy will provide cover for coaching activities in your own arena. However, the policy will not cover any claim as a result of your ownership of the property and maintenance of the arena. For example if an accident occurred because there was a defect in the arena surface, or if a horse or rider slipped on an unsafe car parking area, the liability is likely to fall to you as the property owner. You should ensure that your household or yard insurance covers property owners liability including claims arising out of business use.
