Having professional indemnity, otherwise known as medical indemnity, in place as a pharmacist will protect you against financial loss in the event of a negligent act or omission that causes harm or injury to a patient.

Cover can be purchased separately for buildings and contents depending on whether you own or lease your premises.

Pharmacies need to ensure the continuous and safe provision of healthcare services to their customers which is why locum insurance is a staff absence protection that may help to provide financial support to owners in the event they need to source temporary staff.

We recognise the importance of staying up-to-date with best practice and industry news which is why we provide regular risk management content to keep you informed and help you make strategic decisions that minimise your exposure to risks.
What happens if I need to make a claim?
Even in the best run businesses, mistakes can happen from time to time and having the right cover in place through a provider that understands your sector is critical.
In the event of an incident, you will be supported by our dedicated claims professionals every step of the way as well as your account management team. We take a hands-on, proactive approach, acting as advocates rather than administrators.
Should an incident need to involve legal representation, we recognise the importance of having specialists representing you who understand the medical malpractice sector and importantly the pharmacy sector. This is why we use solicitors with dedicated health and clinical malpractice teams who have in-house pharmacy specific experience.
Frequently asked questions
You are required to have in place a policy to protect you against claims by patients who have suffered loss or damage due to your medical negligence. Usually this is known as professional indemnity or medical malpractice insurance and will often have public liability insurance with it to protect you against non-medical negligence claims, and these are typically trips and slips by patients and customers on the premises.
In addition to taking care of your patients, we know that you are also running and building a business. This has other requirements, some legal, and some that just make good business sense. The covers that you are legally required to have are employers’ liability and third party road risk if your business uses a vehicle.
Aside from this, protecting the assets of your business is key if something unexpected happens. We can provide a policy that, amongst other things, will cover stock, contents, refrigerated vaccines, and business interruption.
Indemnity insurance is available through ourselves from £495 plus insurance premium tax and administration fee.
