Trusted cover for school trips

Taking your students on a break from the classroom? Make sure pupils, teachers, parents and volunteers are protected with school trip insurance.

We’ve partnered with Just Travel Cover to provide educational establishments with the insurance they need for organised trips. So if you haven’t booked a trip directly with a tour operator and are looking to arrange it yourself, we’ve got you covered.

What is school trip insurance?

School trips provide great opportunities for children to enjoy, explore, and discover something new. But they don’t always go smoothly.

School trip cover helps give you reassurance that if the unexpected happens, pupils, teachers, volunteers, and parents are financially protected. So that's cover for emergency medical expenses, cancellation, lost baggage, stolen money, and more.

This cover is for times when you haven’t booked your trip directly with a tour operator (when this type of travel cover is often included).

What does school trip insurance cover?

Sometimes, even with meticulous planning, trips don’t go to plan. With school trip travel insurance in place, you and your travel companions can be reassured that you’ll be financially protected, and supported, if this happens. We’ve partnered with Just Travel Cover to offer you travel insurance specifically designed for school trips.

Cover includes:

Emergency medical expenses
This offers protection if someone on the trip has an accident, illness, or injury abroad. That's up to £10m of cover for emergency medical treatment, repatriation, and the services of a medical assistance company.

Cancellation or curtailment
Cover for up to £1,500 for any non-refundable, unused travel and accommodation costs if the trip has to be cancelled or cut a trip short. This must be due to covered events, such as illness.

Abandonment
You’re covered for up to £1,500 if a decision is made to cancel a trip following a delay of 12 hours or more for the outbound journey from the UK.

Baggage, personal money, and loss of passport
This provides up to £1,000 of cover for items usually carried or worn during a trip if they’re lost, stolen, or damaged. It includes up to £500 of cover for cash and money (£150 pupil money limit), and up to £200 of protection for passports and travel documents.

Personal accident
If one of your party has an accident, this provides up to £10,000 of cover for injury that results in loss of a limb or sight, permanent disability, or death.

Personal liability
This provides up to £2m of cover (increased to £5m for teachers). It can cover costs if someone in your party causes injury or death, or damage to someone's property, and they become legally liable for the damages.

Legal protection
This gives you up to £25,000 of cover if anyone insured (or their representative) makes a claim for compensation due to their death, illness, or personal injury.

  • Cover available for travellers aged up to 75 years old

What’s not covered?

As with most insurance policies, there are certain things that aren’t covered, including:

  • Policy excesses, which is the amount you pay towards a claim.
  • Buying this insurance if you’re aware of circumstances that are likely to lead to a claim.
  • If you can’t provide evidence from a medical professional confirming the illness, infectious disease, injury, or death.
  • Changing your mind about travelling, fear of travelling, or not being able to afford the trip.
  • Undeclared existing medical conditions or symptoms.
  • Trips that begin before the cover start date.
  • Known events or situations before taking out a policy or booking a trip that could prevent travel.
  • Taking part in activities that aren’t stated as covered in the policy documents.
  • Claims caused by alcohol, drugs, or substance abuse.
  • Loss, theft, or damage to valuables, cash, important documents, or personal money left unattended.

School trip travel insurance FAQs

Just Travel Cover's insurance is available for worldwide destinations. You can also insure trips where you're travelling to more than one country.

Just Travel Cover offers insurance for trips that last a maximum of 22 days.

No problem. We understand that things can change. So you don’t have to list all students who are going, when you apply for cover, you just need to state the numbers of pupils going on the trip and one adult lead traveller. There must be one adult per ten children.

Travel insurance isn’t required by law, but it’s a sensible insurance to have. This is especially if the travel group consists of young people on a school trip or expedition.

Having cover in place means that if something unfortunate happens, like needing to access medical treatment or losing a passport, the travellers would be covered. That's instead of their parents or guardians having to foot the full bill. Most insurers include a wide range of circumstances in their policies, such as cover for cancellation and curtailment, replacement passports, and baggage.

For school trip organisers, this kind of cover offers extra peace of mind for parents and travellers (and for agents, customers). Rather than schools or parents having to sort travel insurance for their children’s trip, the cover is already included in the cost of the trip. Or they can buy it as an add-on, if they'd like to.

We’re a leading travel insurance provider in the student and youth travel market. Our group travel insurance has been built with school trip organisers, travel agents, and tour operators in mind.
