What is language school insurance?

Language school insurance provides protection for the many commercial risks that come with running establishments like yours. It can also help protect the students you serve from the moment they apply to study at your institution, through their journey to the UK, and until they return home.

We also have an established offering that can provide international travel insurance for your students. This cover protects hundreds of thousands of overseas students each year, through over 100 different education providers across the UK.

Who can we cover?

We're specialists in providing commercial insurance to language schools and helping them fulfil their duty of care to international students. That’s why we’re the preferred insurance provider for English UK.

Our long-established team covers a wide range of education sectors, including specialist private English language schools and international education providers.

So we have the knowledge and hands-on experience to help make sure you and your students stay protected every step of the way.

What does language school insurance cover?

We can create an insurance package around your language school. We take this approach because the risks you face depend on a range of factors specific to you. So the size of your organisation, your activities, and whether you take on students full-time or for summer schools will come into it, for example.

As well as legally-required cover (such as employers’ liability insurance), you’ll want to consider staple covers such as public liability, buildings and contents, professional indemnity, and business interruption. Cyber insurance has also become a must-have for many.

Commercial insurance for language schools

We offer language schools a comprehensive range of covers, including:

From trips on cables to injuries from equipment, plenty can go wrong on your premises. Public liability insurance covers legal and compensation costs such as medical fees if a third party becomes ill, is injured, or dies, or their property is damaged, and your institution is held responsible. This includes claims from parents, pupils, and visitors.

This pays legal defence costs and any court settlements if an employee has a work-related illness or injury and makes a claim against your school. That could be claims from staff, governors, trustees, trainees, work experience staff, or even volunteers – part-time or full-time.

This covers the cost of rebuild, repairs, or replacements after an unexpected event (such as a fire, flood, or a storm) causes damage to your building and belongings. Buildings insurance is for the physical structure, and contents insurance can cover anything from kitchen equipment to furniture.

Policies can also cover theft and malicious damage, accidental damage, and building subsidence. Key apparatus such as audio-visual equipment, computers, and office machinery can be included.

If an unexpected event, such as extreme weather, fire, electrical failure, or equipment breakdown stops your language school from functioning as usual, this can cover associated costs. This includes lost revenue and increased expenses until you’re back up and running.

Extra expenses it can cover include replacing equipment, training staff, and hiring other premises.

If your language school or its people are accused of professional mistakes, such as negligence or defamation, this covers legal defence and compensation costs. Claims could be for anything from tutors not following the syllabus leading to bad grades to failure of duty of care for an individual student.

Also known as directors’ and officers’ insurance, or trustees’ indemnity, this protects the personal liability of individuals in positions of authority if a claim is made against them.

This includes members of the school board, trustees, and officers. It can cover issues such as committing a wrongful act, including breach of trust or duty, and breach of health and safety.

This gives your school access to legal assistance for issues such as employment disputes, contract disputes, and tax protection. It includes a legal helpline, where you can get expert support and advice.

A cyber insurance policy offers financial protection and incident response for cyber events.

It’s designed to support and protect your establishment if there’s data breach, or if your computer systems are attacked by a malicious hacker. Cover can also be extended to include theft of money due to hacking. To find out more, get in touch with our cyber team.

This provides cover for staff on work-related trips. This includes protection for emergency medical expenses, repatriation, cancellation, delay, personal liability, and loss of money. It also includes a 24-hour emergency helpline.

Protection for international students

As well as your organisation’s commercial risks, we also cater for your students. We work with almost half of all English UK education provider members to include insurance as a part of their study abroad packages.

International student travel insurance

International students often have complex insurance needs, particularly when international travel is involved. What’s more, parents and guardians may want reassurance that their loved ones will be properly protected through their journey to the UK, and until they return home.

Whether it’s irrecoverable pre-paid costs if a student has to cancel a trip, or if they fall ill during their journey to the UK, we’ll help make sure you have the right cover in place. This can include:

  • Cancellation or curtailment of trips due to unexpected events, such as injury or illness.
  • Course fees cover for irrecoverable prepaid course or tuition fees after an unforeseen event.
  • Medical emergency and other expenses if a student is ill on a trip.
  • Baggage and personal possessions that are damaged, stolen, or lost.
  • Personal money, passport, and documents for accidental loss, theft of or damage.
  • Missed departure (and extra costs) if the student can't catch their flight or other public transport for reasons outside of their control.
  • Professional counselling costs for mental health support.

Cover can either be included in your overall study abroad package or offered as an optional extra. Your organisation can also earn revenue on individual insurance as a regulated partner. Our specialist travel team will work with you to make sure you have the right solution in place that benefits both your students and your business.

Language school insurance FAQs

Cover for your establishment and your students can also include:

Financial protection
If a student can't pay their fees due to an unforeseen event, we’ll protect your organisation's income by reimbursing the cost of any course fees they are contractually liable for.

Personal liability
This covers your students if they are legally liable to pay compensation after causing accidental injury to a third party, or damage to their property. This can also help to protect your organisation’s reputation during a legal dispute. This will not only give you reassurance that your student’s liabilities are covered, but also your accommodation, homestay, and school partnerships.

Personal accident
This provides financial security to students and their families if the student has an accident that permanently injures them, or they die, while studying in the UK.

Extended cover
Cover can also be extended to protect your students for up to 21 days for leisure trips across Europe. It can also cover trips anywhere in the world, if it’s part of the student’s course.

Sports and activities cover
This provides automatic cover for over 100 different sports and activities arranged by your organisation. This can save you and your students time, hassle and costs having to arrange specialist cover for any high-risk activities.

When it comes to your insurance, we’re a team. That’s why we provide information and support throughout, so things run smoothly for you and your students.

  • Providing all the relevant information you’ll need to include on your websites
  • Translated policy documentation
  • Support, including insurance, in your online booking portals
  • Ongoing compliance training and support for regulated partners

By including insurance as a part of your services, you and your students can be reassured they're properly covered. Including insurance can also be fantastic marketing tool for encouraging students to book onto your courses. Because there's nothing more important than letting your students know that their safety is your priority.

We’ve partnered with CEGA, the UK’s market leading medical assistance provider specialising in international medical assistance, for our travel medical insurance.

CEGA Assistance offers the highest quality of travel assistance support, including:

  • International emergency medical assistance
  • Medical support, including an in-house medical team for remote location
  • Air ambulance services, repatriation and emergency evacuation
  • Multilingual doctor and nurse escorts
  • Crisis management
  • Translated policy documentation in primary languages

Becoming a partner is a great way to be sure of a high quality of care for your students. Both our partner models are  pay-as-you-go, and there's no upfront setup cost. We’ll only collect premiums based on the number of ‘insured student weeks’ declared to us monthly.

You'll have two options for managing your insurance:

Include cover within your fees
This inclusive option means students are covered under one policy, and the cost is included in their school fees. This gives peace of mind to you and fee payers, knowing students are automatically covered. This is especially important for travel and personal accident.

There is an overwhelming concern that many students are left to take out policies themselves. This may mean they don't have the level of cover they need, or they may be travelling without any insurance at all.

Opt-in insurance
Or you could give your students the option to take out cover themselves. We can work with you to include the insurance offering as a part of the enrolment process and within your booking platforms. If the students choose to include the policy, you collect the premiums, and we’ll invoice on a monthly basis.

With our ‘opt-in’ model, you can also generate an agreed commission on every policy sold. This could provide a a useful additional revenue stream for your language school.
