What charity vehicles are covered?

We can provide cover for all types of vehicles under one policy – whether it’s for a single vehicle, large, or small charity fleet. This is as long as they’re being used for charitable activities. So that's:

  • Commercial vehicles
  • Multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs)
  • Charity cars (including electric)
  • Vans
  • Charity minibuses
  • Leased vehicles
  • Vehicles declared off-road (SORN)

Who’s covered?

We offer cover for all drivers, including volunteers. Our charity vehicle insurance is provided on an any-driver basis. This means any of your staff are insured to drive the vehicles at any time, including volunteers. Though there may be limitations based on age and driving experience.

Levels of motor cover

There are three types of cover available for your vehicles:

Third party
This offers protection if other people are injured or their property is damaged. This is the minimum level of cover you can have by law.

Third party, fire and theft
This protects you if your car is stolen or damaged in a fire. A third party’s injuries and vehicle damage are also covered, but damage to your own vehicle isn't.

Fully comprehensive
This is the highest level of protection, designed to keep you as financially unaffected as possible if an accident happens. It also includes extra covers, such as damage to your car’s contents.

We can also help with breakdown cover to make sure you and your service users don’t get stuck at the side of the road.

What can charity motor insurance cover?

Depending on the level of cover you choose our motor insurance for charities, not-for-profits and community groups can include:

  • Damage to or loss of your vehicle after fire, theft, accidental damage, malicious damage, flood, or vandalism.
  • Your legal liability for death or bodily injury to someone (including staff, volunteers, and service users) and damage to third-party property.
  • Damage to or loss of personal possessions in or on the vehicle due after accidental damage, fire, theft or attempted theft.
  • Windscreen repair or replacement if damaged
  • Replacement keys and locks if they're lost or stolen
  • New for old cover for vehicles under 12 months old, where repairs would cost more than 75% of the value of the vehicle at the time.
  • Medical expenses for the driver or anyone travelling in the vehicle after an injury caused by an accident involving the vehicle.

Charity motor insurance upgrades

Specialist breakdown cover

Prompt action is vital when things take an unexpected turn. So we’ve developed our own breakdown protection scheme to provide highly competitive cover for charities and not-for-profits across the UK. You can call an in-house control centre for urgent assistance, and we also offer wheelchair accessible recovery as an extension.

Laid-up cover

If you have to declare your vehicles off-road (SORN), we’ll provide vehicle cover for accidental damage, fire and theft at a reduced rate. We can also provide cover for modified vehicles, such as vehicles that have wheelchair ramps or tail lifts.

I’m very happy to have our minibus fleet insurance and all the other insurances we require as a small charity handled by their specialist team.

Charity motor insurance FAQs

You need a minimum of third-party vehicle insurance by law to drive in the UK. Charities also have a responsibility to make sure their staff, volunteers, and service users are protected against risks they may meet on the road. For example, our breakdown cover can be extended to include wheelchair accessible recovery.

Your charity or community group may also need a slightly more flexible motor policy than standard car insurance allows. This is because you may need to update your driver and vehicle details on a regular basis. You may also have a number of different vehicle types to insure, such as a mixture of cars, vans and minibuses.

Having fleet insurance can often be more cost-effective (and time-saving) than a standard car insurance policy for charities using more than one vehicle. That’s because they usually have to update their driver and vehicle details on a regular basis.

With a charity fleet insurance policy, cover is usually offered regardless of vehicle type. This includes cars, vans, and charity minibuses. We offer cover any driver (with some limitations), though we may ask you to provide details of any licenced drivers that will be using the vehicles.

Yes, you’ll just need to provide the driving licence details of any staff or volunteers who will be driving the vehicles.
