Scaling carbon removal in Latin America

A regional roadmap for Latin America to unlock high-integrity carbon dioxide removal across biochar and agricultural solutions.

Carbon dioxide removal is becoming a core part of net zero strategies, with increasing demand for scalable, high-integrity solutions. Latin America stands out as a key growth market, combining favourable natural conditions with a strong agricultural base and an emerging pipeline of biochar and hybrid carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects.

Developed by Carbon Business Council in collaboration with leading regional stakeholders, this report sets out a clear investment roadmap for scaling carbon removal across Latin America. It explores the current market landscape, identifies priority technologies and geographies, and highlights where capital can be deployed to accelerate growth. We focus in particular on biochar and agricultural CDR, which offer near-term scalability and strong co-benefits for soil health and resilience.

However, despite growing interest, investment remains constrained by uncertainty around project performance, durability, and market structures continues to limit progress. This is where risk management can make a difference. The report outlines how innovative solutions, including insurance, can reduce uncertainty, build confidence for investors and buyers, and support the development of robust, high-integrity carbon markets.

By aligning capital, technology and risk mitigation, Latin America has the potential to become a global leader in carbon removal.
