Pony Club Members

Horse riding is a high-risk activity and it is important that members understand the benefits that they receive as part of their Pony Club membership as well as other options that are available for additional cover.
Members insurance
Members of The Pony Club automatically receive third party public liability insurance for equestrian activities up to a limit of £30,000,000. This includes, branch members, centre members, centre plus members and non-riding members. Cover differs depending on what category of membership you have.
- Branch and Centre Plus Members - third party liability insurance on a 24/7 basis including the ownership and use of any horse or pony
- Centre Members - third party liability insurance on a 24/7 basis for the member's use (but not ownership) of any horse or pony
- Non-Riding Members - third party liability insurance at any event organised by The Pony Club or at any event where you are representing The Pony Club
Third party liability insurance protects you against liability you may incur as a result of damage to third party property, or bodily injury to a third party, arising out of your participation in Pony Club events and equestrian activities outside of Pony Club events (with the exception of non-riding members). If you are a Branch or Centre Plus member, your insurance cover also includes your ownership of horses and ponies.
Common examples of this are if your horse or pony kicks a car and you are held liable for the cost of repairs. Similarly, if your horse kicked a person and caused an injury which rendered them unable to work, you may be held liable for compensation including loss of earnings.
This insurance is in force 24/7 and is not restricted to an accident at a Pony Club event (with the exception of non-riding members). The policy excludes accidents arising as a result of the member taking part in any horse racing activity other than Pony Club race days or training days.
It is important to understand that this insurance does not cover any damage to your own property or any property in your care and does not cover bodily injury to the member or any family member. The policy does not cover the use of a horse or pony for hire or reward and does not cover the member if they are working within any business, for example, work experience for a competition yard.
There also needs to be negligence in your actions in order for a claim to be valid. In the event of any incident, taking place which could result in a claim, you should notify Howden straight away and it is important that you do not admit liability. Please follow the link on the Accident and Incident reporting page in order to notify an accident.
Members do not receive any personal accident benefit through their membership of The Pony Club. However, members can obtain personal accident cover through our Howden branch network by contacting Howden Life & Heath.
Personal Accident insurance policies vary a huge amount. Many ‘add on’ personal accident policies will cover death and permanent disablement only for relatively low levels. You should consider your individual circumstances when choosing a personal accident policy.
