Insurance for rugby coaches

RFU Coaches are provided with:

Combined Liability

A coach running a coaching session should take reasonable steps to create a safe environment for those taking part. If someone suffers an injury it may be alleged that you are responsible, as the person in charge of the coaching session and you may be required to pay compensation if it is found that you are legally liable.

The RFU has arranged liability protection for coaches working at any RFU club or competition. The coverage includes:

Public Liability insurance

Public liability insurance supports you should a claim made against you following loss or damage to someone's property, or causing them an injury. Cover is provided up to a maximum limit of £25m.

Professional Indemnity Insurance / Errors and Omissions

Professional indemnity protects RFU coaches in respect of claims for compensation made against you for financial loss allegedly caused by negligent errors or ommissions in advice that you have provided. This includes defamation cover.

This is a brief summary of the cover provided. For full details please refer to the cover schedule and policy wording.

When does cover apply?

You are covered as a coach when you are coaching at an RFU affiliate club at Level 3 or below. If, on behalf of that club, you are coaching within a school, college or university, you are also covered.

If you are coaching in a professional capacity on a freelance basis and receiving payment, whether as a sole trader or as a company, you are not covered under the RFU insurance policy and should ensure that you arrange your own liability cover in respect of your coaching activities.

Personal Accident

The RFU has arranged Personal Accident insurance cover for rugby union coaches working at RFU affiliated clubs.

Cover applied whilst coaching or playing, including competitive matches and training, and you are also covered whilst commuting to and/or from a match that you are taking part in.

The policy provides fixed benefit payments for death and permanently disabling or catastrophic injuries, such as a traumatic brain injury or spinal injury, caused as a result of an accident that occurs whilst you are taking part in the sport.

Cover is not included for sickness or injuries resulting from a medical condition. Cover is also not included for loss of income if you are temporarily injured. If you feel that such cover is required we recommend that you take out an additional policy that is appropriate for your needs.
