Corporate social responsibility

Working to become a truly sustainable business.
At Howden Broking, part of Howden Group, we recognise the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and understand that it positively affects our Group, our employees and the local community. Our CSR activities help us deliver our strategic aims and create a distinctive working environment for our people.
We are committed to maintaining high standards of Corporate Governance. Across all the territories in which we operate, we work with the relevant regulators to ensure that all aspects of our business comply with local laws. We apply the principles of the UK Corporate Governance Code and our series of internal policies govern our corporate behaviour.
The Howden Group Foundation
The Howden Group Foundation is a registered charity in England and Wales (no.1156286), and was established in March 2014 to help us ensure that all our CSR activity and donations are aligned with six Group-approved objectives. These are:
- Relief of sickness
- Relief of poverty
- Relief of disasters
- Relief of unemployment
- Advancement of education
- Environmental sustainability
Employees are involved in the selection process of charities and local organisations to be supported. We seek to involve all employees and broaden the range and diversity of charity and community work that we undertake across the globe.
The Foundation also supports matched giving programme, whereby the Group supports the fundraising and volunteer efforts of employees, for the communities and charities of their choice, by matching up to £750 of fundraising per employee, per year.

Million for a Million
In 2018 we launched a new Group charity initiative, Million for a Million, with the aim is to raise US$1 million, by encouraging employees and key business partners to take part in fundraising events and challenges in support of four organisations:
Millions of people around the world live with depression and other mental illnesses, yet many individuals are still afraid to talk about it. Aiming to reduce this stigma, our work with Black Dog will help to raise awareness around mental health and support their research |

By working with InteRed we will have the opportunity to change the lives of children, young adults and women from some of the poorest areas in Mexico. InteRed provides children with access to an education and training for young adults. | We are joining Plastic Oceans’ global movement to reduce plastic consumption and the waste which is dumped into our seas. Their work also seeks to change the world’s attitude towards plastic, looking at real alternatives to stop the pollution of our oceans. |
In addition to the four key charity partners above, we also globally supported a further 33 charities through Million for a Million initiatives worldwide. In October 2019, M4M came to an end having raised over $1.2 million for our four charity partners and a further $400,000 for a further 33 charities selected by local offices worldwide.
